Carole Smollan began her career as a lingerie designer. She designed lace for a Swiss company and incorporated the lace with her lingerie designs. She was elected young business woman of the year at 19 years old and became the head designer of a public company. The evidence of structure draughting and decorative "lace frills" can be seen throughout her career which has spanned 25 years. She has used diverse medium from ceramics to silk, for the large murals and wall hangings she favours. The varied mediums she paints have different applications, her painterly approach with free flowing strokes in an impressionist style can be seen throughout her work. Her style is eminently suited to silk painting. She is essentially a colourist and her main interest is the science of painting in colour. The down side of this is a comment from her two daughters and son that "each time they come home the walls have changed colour??" She is inspired by the light and sheen of the silk. She takes time out every year to experiment with the silk painting technique developing new methods with the colours and extending the use of the medium, particularly with the new velvet materials. The excitement of opening the kiln to see how a glaze has fired, has now been replaced by the wonderful free unmapped effects that one can achieve by using the watermarks and salt techniques of silk painting as a painters tool. Twice a year she opens her studio for workshops which concentrate on colour and design. She came to teaching late in her career concentrating on exhibiting first. She loves teaching beginners and believes painting is a "learnt" skill, a language of seeing, not a talent! She is currently writing a book for art teachers. She also gives workshops at The Courtauld Institute and Somerset House. Her most recent exhibitions have been at The Klutznik Museum, part of the Smithsonian in Washington, London Jewish Museum, Whitworth Museum Manchester, The British Biennale, Tokyo World Ceramic show and many private collections and commissioned pieces in public places. She is passionate about gardening, nature and country walks, from which she draws much inspiration. She is completing a large commissioned 10ft wedding canopy as a permanent feature for a synagogue. She is also the author of seven books on the management of coeliac disease. |
