Batik for Artists and Quilters

by Eloise Piper
Search Press

Marjorie Dawson here reviews a couple of books not strictly about silk painting but on batik. It is not, however, unusual for techniques to cross over between the two methods of working on textiles.

News has reached me of what I hope will be another 'good book' from Search Press promised, they say, in Spring 2001. It is Creative Batik by Rosi Robinson, published in paperback for (GBP) £7.95

The book will cover various practical techniques including random waxing, tjantings, masking crackling etc. using flowers, trees, birds and animals as subjects, as well as landscape and abstract motifs. If the book is up to Search Press's usual standard it will prove to be a treat. ISBN 0 85532 892 4

Another new book from Search Press Batik for Artists and Quilters by Eloise Piper promises many delights for those of us taking Open College of the Arts or City & Guilds courses. It is in hardback and costs (GBP) £19.99 and I suspect, will be more comprehensive than the paperback 'How-to' books. As well as 'step-by-steps' it will feature batiks from SE Asia, India, China, North America and Europe. It sounds as though it will inspire and teach and it should be in your book shops soon.
