Hello from St. Lucia

to the Gallery I have just been on holiday in St Lucia with my husband and daughter. While on this beautiful island we spent a morning with the silk painter Daniel Jean-Baptiste. The first words about our visit are from my daughter Kate who is 12 years old and is also a budding silk painter.

'St. Lucia is known for beautiful beaches and luscious rain forests. What more could you want to do in such a place than what you love, silk paint? Daniel Jean-Baptiste has an idealistic view over Pigeon Point on St Lucia while he works away. (see below!)

'He was born in St. Lucia and went to school in the old capital Soufriere. Ever since he was a young boy, the locals recognised him as the little boy who could capture the sea with his watercolours. Jean-Baptiste was introduced to silk in Canada in 1978 and later started his own company in 1988 where he produced hand-made banners for shopping centres and real-estate developers across Canada.

'He moved back to St Lucia with his wife and children in 1995 and now has such a reputation that artists all over the Caribbean and United States cherish his paintings. His work is in the collection of South Africa's President, Nelson Mandela; Nobel Laureate Derek Walcott; Four Star General Colin Powell and Songwriter Paul Simon. His style is very distinctive reflecting the waters and the wildlife of the Caribbean, capturing the idyllic watery feel of the beautiful blue sea. My favourite was the turtle swimming carelessly below the sun-warmed sea. His house is filled with these unique paintings and maybe one day his children will follow in his footsteps; they have already shown great talent. I would like to take this opportunity of thanking Mr Jean-Baptiste for my beautiful silk painting he gave to me during our visit.' Kate Kennedy

It was a pleasure for us to see the studio where Daniel paints; the view from his studio window is quite stunning. Daniel was a great host and time flew by as we discussed various aspects of our trade, he even produced a copy of one of my first books to autograph. He is a very busy man and is about to start his own exhibition touring the US beginning in Michigan and ending in New York. Do visit his website - www.jean-baptiste.com - and if you ever travel to St Lucia, I am sure he would be pleased to see you.
